Supertubos
A legendary world-class beach break renowned on the global surf stage, Peniche surf is synonymous with Supertubos. This powerful wave is famous for some of the heaviest barrels in Europe. Consistent and dependable across all tides, it offers a playground for advanced surfers seeking adrenaline-pumping rides. The central A-frame peak produces a fast, reeling left-hander, while the right-hander, though shorter, packs a serious punch with intense sections. It’s a spot where timing, commitment, and skill come together in every drop.

Molho leste
A world-class, hollow right-hand wedge that offers a thrilling ride best suited for intermediate to advanced surfers. Nestled along the jetty, this break comes to life when the swell direction aligns just right, producing a steep, almost vertical take-off that immediately throws you into fast, down-the-line walls or deep, spinning barrels. It’s a wave that demands both skill and commitment — there’s little room for hesitation. The lineup can be intense and is known for its strong local presence, so showing respect and awareness in the water is essential.

Almagreira
Offers a peaceful and spacious setting, making it a favourite among surfers looking to escape the hustle. It features multiple peaks scattered along its length, with both lefts and rights breaking over a sandy bottom, providing a variety of options depending on swell direction. Thanks to its forgiving sandbanks and the range of wave sizes, Almagreira is suitable for surfers of all levels, from beginners looking to catch their first wave to advanced surfers hunting for longer rides and open faces. It tends to work best around high tide.

Cantinho
An excellent choice for beginner to intermediate surfers looking for consistent waves in Peniche. Cantinho da Baia offers a reliable beach break that works well throughout the year. The break is known for its versatility, featuring multiple peaks that can produce both lefts and rights, depending on the swell and tide. This diversity allows surfers to spread out and find their own space. Whether you’re taking your first steps on a board or looking to progress to the next level, Cantinho offers easy access, forgiving conditions, and manageable wave size.

Lagide/Prainha
Prainha features both right and left hand breaks, making it a great learning ground for developing basic techniques and gaining confidence. The beach has a predominantly sandy bottom with only a few scattered rocks. Lagide is known for its consistent, long left-hand reef break. The wave typically starts with a steep take-off section that quickly mellows out, offering long, playful rides. While it’s a great spot for intermediates, it’s important to stay mindful of the reef, especially during low tide or bigger swells, as it can become shallow in places.

Consolação
A quality, right-hand point break known for its consistency and long, peeling walls that offer a variety of sections, from mellow open faces perfect for carving, to hollow, fast inside sections. Best surfed with north-east wind, which cleans up the face and adds definition to the lines, the wave typically starts off slower and more forgiving at the takeoff zone, gradually gaining speed and power as it wraps around the point. The bottom is rocky, with scattered sea urchins, so caution is advised, especially during low tide or when paddling in or out.

Why Peniche is Europe’s Surf Capital
Peniche is a unique geographical peninsula projecting into the Atlantic Ocean, offering north- and south-facing coastlines within a few minutes’ drive. This rare topography allows surfers to catch clean, offshore winds virtually every day—if the wind is onshore on one side of the peninsula, it is offshore on the other. Combined with high swell consistency and broad swell windows that capture ocean energy from North, West, and South directions, Peniche guarantees rideable waves year-round for all skill levels.
Best Time of Year to Surf in Peniche
- Autumn & Winter: Heavy Swells and Pros
- Spring & Summer: Mellow Waves and Beginners
From October through March, powerful North Atlantic low-pressure systems pump heavy, consistent swells into the coast. This is prime season for experienced surfers seeking overhead barrels at Supertubos. Peniche also hosts the world-renowned WSL MEO Rip Curl Pro Portugal, bringing the world’s elite professional surfers to Supertubos to battle in world-class conditions.
From April through September, wave heights taper off into clean, manageable sets ranging from 2 to 5 feet. Warmer weather, longer daylight hours, and gentle ocean conditions make spring and summer ideal for beginner lessons, longboarding, and refining fundamental surf maneuvers.
Wetsuit Guide: What to Pack
The Atlantic Ocean around Peniche remains cool year-round due to deepwater upwelling:

A 3/2mm full wetsuit (or a quality 2/2mm shorty on very warm days).
