Along the stunning coastline of Portugal, the seaside towns of Baleal, Ferrel, and Peniche offer a rich tapestry of culinary experiences suited to every palate. Whether you’re seeking fresh seafood, traditional Portuguese cuisine, or international flavors, this charming region has always something to offer. Let’s embark on a gastronomic journey to discover the culinary treasures that await in these picturesque places.
Baleal Restaurants
The combination of the sea breeze and the aromas from the kitchen create an unforgettable ambiance. O Febras (meat, fish, seafood): traditional Portuguese cuisine takes center stage here. Taberna do Ganhão (meat, fish, seafood): long-standing Portuguese traditions with a taste of modern innovation. Mundano Baleal: yes, we have a vegetarian & vegan restaurant. For those seeking plant-based options, this establishment offers a vegetarian & vegan dining experience, complemented by an impressive selection of organic wines. Bar do Bruno, Bocaxica bar, Tribo (Bar da Praia): beach bars for brunch with amazing ocean views (except Bocaxica, but they have tasty and big sandwiches).
Ferrel Restaurants
A short distance from Baleal is the village of Ferrel with a rich culinary heritage, where local eateries showcase an array of hearty, flavourful dishes that have been passed down through generations.
A Caseirinha: typical Portuguese “churrasqueira”. The taste of their chicken is truly amazing. I am confident to say you never eat better grilled chicken. Go there and see and taste for yourself. Not vegan friendly. Taberna dos Almocreves: traditional portuguese cuisine at its finest. Include a cozy, rustic atmosphere. This taberna welcomes guests to enjoy food in an atmosphere that radiates warmth and tradition.
Peniche Restaurants
With its breathtaking seaside location, visitors to Peniche can indulge in classic portuguese specialties such as the iconic Bacalhau (salted cod), Caldo Verde (kale soup), Feijoada (bean stew with meat) grilled sardines, octopus, and flavourful seafood stews, all seasoned with the distinctive flavors of the sea.
Tasca do Joel (meat, fish, seafood): the history of the restaurant began in 1982 when it was a small house that served as a meeting place for fishermen returning from work. Currently Tasca do Joel has become a must-visit for everyone who visits Peniche. Culinary experiences that celebrate the rich traditions and flavors of Portugal. Xakra (meat, fish, seafood): for a truly authentic dining experience, venture to this seaside restaurant where you can dine al fresco while admiring the mesmerizing ocean views. Soul-warming dishes accompanied by wines (carefully chosen by the owner of the restaurant) add an extra layer to the dining experience. Without any compromise, it is the quality of the fish and seafood that justifies the visit. And not just that. The personal approach of the staff (especially Ruben) and caring owners give Xakra an unforgettable atmosphere. Sol é Vida (fish, seafood): savour the authentic flavors and traditions that define the region’s gastronomic identity. The breathtaking seaside location will help you forget about the not-the-best service. Still worth visiting.
International Cuisine
Sushi Fish in Baleal: doesn’t need many words. It’s great! Funky Donkey in Ferrel: best pizza in the area made in a wood oven. Master’s Burger in Ferrel: meat, veggie burgers. Cartel 71 Taqueria & Tequila Bar in Ferrel: Mexican food. Maharani: Indian restaurant in Peniche. Picanha Gaucha: Brazilian steak house in Ferrel.
And what about breakfast? There are so many padarias, cafetarias, pastelarias in the area with amazing coffee, cakes, sandwiches. Just pick one. My favorite one is Padaria do Marquito in Ferrel.
That is my recommendation. Peniche area has a lot more restaurants. Whether your heart desires fresh seafood, traditional Portuguese cuisine, or global flavors, this captivating region is sure to entice you. Bom appetite!
